How Empowering Employees Translates to Business Success

    With just a quick browse of the latest top ten lists, LinkedIn user stories, and employee relations headlines, today’s employee expectations become very clear. Aside from the usual bit about money, power and fame, employees lean heavily towards jobs that can satisfy their own sense of self and reflect their core values.

    A recent Inc. Magazine report titled "Ten Things Employees Want More Than a Raise" included desires like to feel less stress, have a little security and beat out the competition. But companies can’t give their employees everything. They’ve got desires of their own, like adding value and expanding brand. Successful companies do recognize, however, how very vital employee satisfaction is to achieving their business goals, and they are balancing these two separate agendas by introducing a new dynamic to their business strategy: empowering the employee.

    Just how can empowering employees translate to business success? Let’s go back to considering what it takes to make them happy:

    What Wakes Employees Feel Stress?

    Poor processes, under-recognition, miscommunication and undefined job roles are just a few. And security? Being equipped with company resources that will help them do their job well is important, as is working for a company that can keep its doors open far into the future. What about beating out the competition? Employees can be very savvy about their industry these days thanks to online information – they are acutely aware of what’s working, what’s not and what actions the company is (or is not) taking to get to the top.

    Again, businesses have a hefty agenda of their own without having to always being on guard for the next resignation scramble or call from HR. Considering a recent statistic that unhappiness among workers in America is costing $300 billion per year in lost productivity, empowering employees with the tools strategies and resources that meet their desires (thus making them happy) is pretty darn important.

    Let’s visit those employee desires once again and see how automated systems and processes are able to meet them.

    1. Feel less stress. Paperwork is stressful, especially if it’s tedious, redundant, unnecessary, or (gasp) gets lost. Replacing paper processes with digital ones means an employee can spend his/her day addressing their primary job instead of fixing a paper jam or reconstructing a paper trail to figure out where he/she went wrong.
    2. Have a little security. Job security is dependent on several conditions, including: how innovative and financially savvy a company is; how well you execute your job; and what measures a company has in place to gauge your performance accurately. Automated processes allow companies to access unbiased metrics that reflect performance (like how quickly they got their jobs through the queue, or how much revenue their participation in the workflow contributed).
    3. Beat out the competition. Everyone likes feeling like a winner. Being part of a company that employs winning strategies can meet this desire and even fuel productivity. Winning strategies in today’s business market most often include the ability to leverage the latest technologies to decrease inefficiencies, drive revenue and ready themselves for the next evolution in business – whatever that might be.
